Beaches where dogs are welcome

Sleeping Bear Dunes allows leashed dogs (6-foot leash maximum) on certain beaches and trails year-round. Closest to the cabin:

  • Lake Michigan beach north of Good Harbor Trail Road (County Road 651) – open to leashed dogs all year.
  • Pyramid Point Trail and Empire Bluff Trail – dog-friendly hikes with big Lake Michigan views.

Please note: the stretch of Good Harbor beach between Bohemian Road (County Road 669) and Good Harbor Trail Road is closed to dogs, as is the face of the Dune Climb. Some trails, including the Good Harbor Bay Trail and the Heritage Trail, close to pets from December 1 to March 31. Rules change, so check the National Park Service pet page before you go.

Trails and preserves

  • Leelanau Conservancy natural areas welcome leashed dogs. Favorites include DeYoung, Clay Cliffs, Palmer Woods, Krumwiede Forest Reserve and Chippewa Run.
  • Leelanau State Park near Northport has 8.5 miles of dog-friendly trails (beaches there are closed to dogs to protect nesting birds).

What guests with dogs say

"We stayed with our three teenage children and two dogs. Typically dog friendly rentals are very clearly dog friendly as evidenced by smell and condition but this was absolutely NOT the case at Overby Woods! The house is immaculate."
Katie O.
"My husband and I came here for some R&R with our two dogs, and the cabin is removed and secluded enough for that, but with all the creature comforts you could need."
Erin D.
